A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
