The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Medications

Less than a tenth of patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy have access to them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its initial advice on the drugs.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is calling for broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, over two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing treatment," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to universal access to the jabs that can help people shift considerable weight, says the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even in the current most optimistic case, the production of GLP-1 therapies could only cover about 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation calls on countries and companies to increase access, through strategies such as voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Work

GLP-1 drugs replicate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so users eat less.

Individuals usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research suggests users may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the medication, as their typical hunger return.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for contracting health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and specific cancers.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
