Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
